A Few Things About Hunting at The Quail Shed
How to Enjoy The Perfect Hunt!
Each year, we have a few new hunters in camp. And, over time, we have noticed that the ones who seem to have the best
time on their hunt have something in common. They trust their guides, and they do not put excessive pressure on themselves.
They are hunting with us because they are interested in trying to kill a big buck. And, they are willing to sit anywhere
we put them, and wait for that opportunity! The time that they spend at The Quail Shed is usually time away
from work, so they take a break, and are willing to leave those worries behind.
Have you ever heard that attitude is everything?
Arriving at Camp
You should arrive at Quail Shed headquarters around 11:30 AM on the first day of your hunt. This will allow us time to get you signed in, and show you where you will be staying during your hunt. After you have your gear unloaded, we will get out to the range to check your bow or gun to make sure it is still correctly sighted in. Then, you will have some time to get cleaned up, and ready, before we get you out for your first afternoon hunt.
Our Daily Schedule
Clifford and the guides wake up at 4:00 AM. By 4:30, the staff is in the kitchen setting up the Continental breakfast, and the coffee is brewing. We set out fresh fruit, dry cereal, oatmeal, grits, and pastries, along with milk and orange juice. Tea is available, if you really must have it!
At 4:35 AM its lights on, and all of our hunters get told to wake up!
We make everyone a big sack lunch to take
with you to your stand, which includes an Extra Large sandwich, a bag of chips, a piece of fruit, and a bottled drink,
either water or a soft drink with a screw on cap! This is to hold you over until supper time, and keep you in the woods
hunting! There are also cookies and candy on the table at all times, for the guys who have a sweet tooth!
At no later than 5:25 AM, we are getting everyone headed to their stands.
After all of our hunters are out, the early hours of the morning are spent riding and glassing other properties, to monitor deer activity. When someone calls in to tell us they have shot a deer, we are available to track or recover it within a few minutes. All deer are brought to our skinning shed, where we take trophy photos, weigh them, and rough score the antlers. We have everything in place to skin, cape, quarter, and ice down a deer, and we like to get them done right away!
Right after sundown, everyone sits down to a great home cooked meal, with all you can eat! Warning: You may gain weight on this hunt
After supper, your guide will discuss the events of the day with you. That information will be used to decide about
the following day's hunt!
We make all decisions on who is hunting where, early the next morning, due to ever changing
weather conditions and scouting reports!
